This video will show you how to record a microphone on Windows 10. This is useful if you want to record your audio separately when recording your screen, or if you want to record audio, such as singing or playing an instrument. As long as you have a Windows computer, and a microphone, you can use this method to create audio files from your microphone.

First, you will need to install the audacity program. This is a free open source program that has a lot of advanced features, but also allows for very simple audio editing if that is all you need. You can download it from http://www.ninite.com by just selecting the checkbox next to audacity under the media section. Then just hit the "Get Your Ninite" button, and run the program it downloads.

After it has finished installing, open Audacity. In the window that appears, you will see tons of options, but luckily recording your microphone only requires a few of them. First, select your microphone from the dropdown menu towards the top with a picture of a microphone next to it. Next, set the audio level of the microphone using the slider. You can leave it at default to begin with, but if the audio is to loud or quite, just adjust the slider so the microphone volume is reasonable.

Next, to record the audio, just hit the red circle. This will immediately start recording, and will stop when you hit the yellow square.

When you do this, you will see a recording show up in the window. This can be manipulated right there, where if you want to delete sections of audio, you can highlight them with the mouse and then hit delete. You can also record multiple tracks on top of each other, or even adjust the volume of the recorded tracks. Audacity has a ton of different features for recording, but those are the main ones you would probably need for beginners.

After you have the audio recorded how you want it, you need to export the audio to the format you want. If you go to the file menu, you will see an option that says "save project" this does NOT save your audio in a format that ca be read by a music play (.wav, .mp3, etc) it just saves the project so you can keep working on it later in audacity. To save the audio to a format, go to the file menu and select export. There, you can select the format you want to export it to at the bottom. By defualt, it cannot save to .mp3, but I have another video showing how to easily set that up.

After selecting your format, just choose where you want the file saved, and hit ok on the windows that pop up. Afterthis you will have asaved recording of your microphone that you can play back on any device that supports music playback.
