Lake Mead Rising/Lake Powell Falling?
Hi, welcome to the Lake Mead and Hoover Dam water level update for August 2023. Water levels at Lake Mead continue to rise so why are water levels dropping at Lake Powell?
After reviewing the current water level statistics we discuss how the states in the Colorado River Basin are currently in the process of negotiating a replacement set of laws for the "2007 Interim Guidelines" as well as the "2019 Drought Contingency Plans". These two plans as well as several other documents and international treaties that outline how the Colorado River is managed, are set to expire at the end of 2026. What does this mean for the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead?
Next, we switch our focus to the Glen Canyon Dam and its reservoir, Lake Powell. With the tremendous amount of rain and snow the Colorado River Basin received this winter, why are the water levels at Lake Powell suddenly falling?
