---- Short History ----
The first castle was a Norman ringwork in the late 11th century.
William 1st rewarded many lands to the Marcher Lords after the Norman Conquest of 1066.
Robert FitzHamon distributed the lands of Glamorgan amongst his men.
Sir Payn was forced to acquire lands by himself though.
Payn married Sybil, the daughter of Morgan Gam, the welsh leader and became the Lord of Coity (possible story).
Payn de Turberville became Lord of Coity in the beginning of the 12th century.
Coity, Newcastle and Ogmore castles joined to defend the Lordship of Glamorgan along the western border.
From 1180 the castle was refortified with stone.
In 1384, Sir Lawrence Berkerolles inherited the castle and added many alterations such as the east gate, a new stone curtain and a four story round latrine.
In the 15th century Coity defended against a siege from Owain Glyndwr.
Gilbert Denys and William Gamedge illegally besieged it and they were later thrown in the Tower of London.
But after 1411 the castle passed to the Gamage family.
During the 16th century the castle underwent a complete remodelling including a storey and chimney stacks.
In 1585 Barbara Gamage married Sir Robert Syndey and moved, leaving the castle to decay.
It was abandoned around the 17th century.
Eventually the Coity lordship passed to the Earls of Dunraven.
