Pulse-width modulation (PWM), also known as pulse-duration modulation (PDM) or pulse-length modulation (PLM), is any method of representing a signal as a rectangular wave with a varying duty cycle (and for some methods also a varying period).
In power electronics, pulse width modulation is a proven effective technique that is used to control semiconductor devices. Pulse width modulation or PWM is a commonly used control technique that generates analog signals from digital devices such as microcontrollers. The signal thus produced will have a train of pulses, and these pulses will be in the form of square waves. Thus, at any given time, the wave will either be high or low. We use PWM signals to control power electronic switches. In addition, PWM signals are used to control servo motors and control the brightness of LEDs. A PWM can be thought of as the inverse of an analog-to-digital converter. In fact, PWM is used to generate analog signals from a digital component such as a microcontroller.
