How Should One Study Myeongri?
The study of Myeongri lies in deep contemplation. Why?
To state the conclusion first, in Saju Myeongri, there is nothing to memorize other than the 10 Heavenly Stems, 12 Earthly Branches (60 Jiazi), and 24 Seasonal Energies.
With academy-style or rote learning, progress may seem fast at first, and it may appear you will reach your goals early, but once you reach a certain limit, it becomes difficult to expect further progress.
Even after studying for years, looking at one's Saju Palja leaves one feeling bewildered and even more confused, leading people to give up midway or seek out secret Myeongri methods.
The problem lies in the failure to contemplate.
First, study the characteristics of each of the 10 Heavenly Stems, 12 Earthly Branches, and 24 characters in relation to Yin and Yang, the Five Elements, seasons, and time. Then, through deep contemplation of the relationships between these characters, approach the subject by asking "Why?" and understanding the principles reached. This is the effective method of study.
** For example, from the perspective of the Rat (子), why are the Dog (戌) and Tiger (寅) considered "Gyeokgak" (격각)? Furthermore, why are they referred to as Sangmun (상문) and Jogaek (조객)?
The answer lies in the flow of time. Is it an event of the past? Or is it an event of the future?
