Murdeshwar is a coastal town on Arabian Sea, located in the northern part of Karnataka. It is famous for the Murdeshwar temple that was built in the 16th century and dates back to Ramayan. Its chronicled that when Lord Shiva gave Atmalinga (soul of Shiva) to Ravan as boon of immortality, he set the condition that the Atma Linga should not be kept on ground before reaching destination as it will get rooted there. However, knowing the consequences, Lord Vishnu,with help of Lord Ganesh, illussioned Ravan. Atma Linga was kept on ground and couldn't be uprooted. Ravan tried to destroy it and eventually it got broken to parts and wherever it scattered, the places became a holy 'peeth'. The cloth covering the Atmalinga fell in Murdeshwar.
