We continue publishing Father Konstantin Korepanov's series of talks, "Essays on the History of the Russian Church." These talks were held in the "Sophia" Holy Scripture study group in the lecture hall of the Church on the Blood in Yekaterinburg from 2011 to 2015 (at that time, Father Konstantin was still a layman).

Part 8. Events and Lessons of the 17th-Century Church Schism. Canonical Illiteracy

CONTENTS:
0:00 – An example of theological zeal beyond reason in the correction of liturgical books.
04:39 – The Book Room on the Right under Patriarch Joseph. Correcting Errors in Liturgical Books Based on Old Books Written in Greek.
08:12 – On the influence of Western scholarship of dubious quality on the Moscow clergy.
20:20 – Nikon's first innovations as patriarch. Decree ("memory") on the introduction of the sign of the cross with three fingers and on changing the number of prostrations during services. Administrative governance instead of a conciliar culture of decision-making. The cause of unrest among the Moscow clergy was not so much the circular itself as the administrative pressure during its introduction.
31:37 – An example of examining issues of violation of canonical discipline in the Church in our time.
33:27 – The development of church reform under Patriarch Nikon and the struggle against its opponents. The Moscow Council of 1654. Correction of ancient liturgical books based on Greek copies printed in Uniate printing houses. The practice of ceremonial defrocking of priests. 36:26 – The attitude of the remaining Orthodox patriarchs toward the church reform of the Russian Church. The charter of Patriarch Paisius I of Constantinople regarding church unity and differences in rites.
39:43 – Nikon's defrocking of the priest Ivan Neronov. A system of coercion by church authority that goes beyond matters of doctrine. A police regime subordinate to the patriarch.
43:59 – The development of the church schism after Nikon's departure from the patriarchate (1658). Archpriest Avvakum, returned from exile, is favored by the tsar. Using his status as a victim of the faith, Avvakum begins to combat Nikon's innovations on his own initiative, rather than by convening a church council.
47:33 – Who should be considered a schismatic? How should one treat someone who agitates you not to attend church? Schisms occur when people arrogate to themselves the authority of a council. 50:50 – The uncertainty of the church situation: on the one hand, the vague position of the hierarchy in the absence of the patriarch, on the other, the energetic activities of Archpriest Avvakum and his supporters aimed at destroying church unity.
58:10 – What does fear mean within the Church? There should never be fear within the Church, for fear gives opportunity to untruth. How should internal church complaints be addressed? What does the expression "to lay a trap for one's neighbor" mean? On canonical illiteracy.
1:11:23 – Schism about the end times and the expectation of the coming of the Antichrist. Elder Ephraim: "It is possible to be saved without the life-giving sacraments."
1:19:50 – The decisions of the Great Moscow Council (1666-1667), which the Russian Church accepted despite some damage to its identity. Nikon's condemnation for abandoning his episcopal see and maintaining his innovations.
1:32:14 – Understanding the events of the 17th-century church schism: the need for our own education system, God's judgment on our idea of "Moscow as the Third Rome," unsupported by real achievements, God's judgment on Russian ignorance and reliance on ritual.
1:40:44 – The activities of Archpriest Avvakum and his supporters after the Great Moscow Council. The revolt of the Solovetsky Monastery.
