There is much debate about whether a flint-and-steel fire can be made without charred materials. A father/son team recently did a great video on some natural materials that require very little processing to make them effective (link below). However, there is one natural material that you can simply pick and use, no processing required. That's the "fin" from common milkweed pods.
This method does have some liabilities. First, the dried fins are only available autumn through winter, and sometimes in early spring. Secondly, as you'll see in the video, when they catch they ember up quickly and with a low amount of heat, so you must have a good tinder bundle ready, and perhaps a coal extender (in this video I added a second fin to give it a slightly longer burn time).
Otherwise, this is an easy way to use your flint and steel kit without any need of char, drying materials, powdering materials, etc.
A quick tip -- I've found that the color of the fin seems to make a difference. Lighter colored ones seem to take a bit less easily than darker colored ones. Let me know if you agree!
