Foetal bovine serum (FBS) is made from the blood of unborn calves. After their mother is killed, the blood of these calves is drained via cardiac puncture – a needle inserted directly into their heart, without pain relief. Their blood is then processed into serum, which is sold to the biopharmaceutical industry and exported overseas. This hideous practice is completely unnecessary, as there are already ethical, animal-free serums available on the market.
