How To Properly Burn A Candle
Burning a candle properly ensures it lasts longer, burns evenly, and minimizes issues like tunneling, soot, and excessive smoke. Here’s how to do it right:
1. Trim the Wick: Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch. This helps ensure a cleaner, brighter burn. Long or crooked wicks can cause uneven burning, dripping, or flaring.
2. Allow a Full Melt Pool: The first time you burn your candle, allow it to burn long enough so that the wax melts across the entire surface to the sides of the container. This can take 2-4 hours depending on the candle’s size. Failing to do this can result in tunneling, where the candle burns down the middle, leaving a ring of hard wax around the edges.
3. Avoid Drafts: Keep your burning candle away from drafts, vents, fans, or any air currents. This will help prevent rapid or uneven burning, soot, and dripping.
4. Keep It Burning: After achieving a full melt pool, it’s generally recommended to keep the candle burning for no more than 4 hours at a time. Burning for longer can cause the wick to become unstable or the candle to overheat.
5. Center the Wick: After extinguishing the flame, center the wick in the melted wax with a non-flammable instrument if it has moved. Do this while the wax is still molten. Centering the wick ensures an even burn the next time you light the candle.
6. Cover When Not in Use: If your candle comes with a lid, cover it when not in use to prevent dust and debris from settling on the wax. This helps maintain the candle’s quality over time.
7. Safety First: Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep it away from anything that can catch fire, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
8. Cool Before Relighting: Allow the candle to cool completely before trimming the wick and relighting it. This wait can ensure the wax sets properly and the wick is trimmed to the right length.
