In "Seussical the Musical," Gertrude spends the duration of the show pining for "Horton the Elephant." Her singular purpose culminates in the ballad "Notice Me Horton," in which she declares her feelings and insists that Horton "put down his clover" and notice her.
In high school, I refused to audition for the part, even though it was the lead female role. I found Gertrude's character to be insultingly shallow and boring. I instead went for "Mayzie," which was supposed to be the mean girl of the show-but at least had a fun salsa song.
Fast-forward to few years ago, when I found myself once again, embarrassingly victimized by feelings for someone. I was sitting on the ground outside when the irony it all occurred to me. I had refused to audition for Gertrude because I thought she was so stupid and yet, here I was.
Literally being Gertrude.
I opened my notes app and wrote this song in about fifteen minutes. I haven't had the resources to make this exist outside of my head until now.
