Egypt Gate | A Tour of Al-Darb Al-Ahmar: Heritage Houses Between Neglect and Restoration with Dr. Omnia Abdel-Bar
Dr. Omnia Abdel-Bar takes us on a tour of several heritage houses in Al-Darb Al-Ahmar, documenting the city's transformations over the past twenty years.
Abdel-Bar, a researcher at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and director of Beit Al-Razzaz, calls for a different approach to preserving the memory and identity of our city. She points out that the government focuses on registered buildings and asks, "What about unregistered buildings like Beit Sadek?"
She proposes several solutions, most importantly amending current laws, as many houses in historic Cairo are slated for demolition. The solution, she argues, is restoration, not demolition, and encouraging both civil society and the private sector to play a role in the historic city. --------------------------------------------------
