West Highland Way & Great Glen Way Thru-hike Prep Series
Welcome to the introductory video to my Scotland Prep Series! My name is Shannon and I'm from Florida, USA. For my birthday next year I decided I needed to do something really special so I decided I would spend it walking through Scotland on two of the country's long distance walking paths. What started out as just a one thru-hike and some sightseeing excursions to chase down where some of my DNA came from quickly evolved into two thru hikes.
The West Highland Way will be my first official thru hike, meaning start to finish all in one shot. There are sure to be challenges along the way, not the least of which will be the terrain and climate differences from what I am used to hiking here in Florida.
Why do I want to do this? How will I prepare? What gear do you need to backpack and camp in the wilds of Scotland? Follow my journey from my everyday life of a wife, mother and dog wrangler (I have a lot of dogs, ya'll) in Florida to the stunning landscape of the Scottish Highlands as I aim for not only the journey of a lifetime but some clarity within myself as I hope to be able to come to terms with some significant losses in my life and work through some personal baggage. I'll also be traveling to places where relatives once lived and trace their journeys from Scotland to the new world.
I'll be sharing my gear selection and trial processes as well as my thoughts and feelings in the 9 months leading up to my trip. I hope you will join me on this journey. If you've already walked these trails, I would love your feedback and any advice you have to offer. If you hope to hike either of these trails one day, watch as I navigate everything from what socks to choose (this makes a HUGE difference, trust me) to how I plan to navigate a terrain that is unfamiliar to me and an ocean away from my life back in the US.
