—Was Janus a spy? An assassin?
He was a member of the royal knights, but because he was so loyal, he was burdened with a lot of dirty work, including espionage and assassination. Janus rose up from commoner to knight, so although he’s treated around town as a local success or hero of sorts, there is no doubt some envy there, too. In any event, because of his relationship with the previous king of Crell Montferaigne, he performs his duties with blind devotion. Also, although he uses a crossbow as an Einherjar, in his mortal life he was also proficient with other weapons, including blades.
—Why does he stand there silently in front of his house?
10 years have passed since Janus left the royal knights and was expelled from his country. When Valkyrie sees him there, he has just returned to Crell Montferaigne out of concern for his King who he left behind. In that moment, he had just found out that his King had passed away, and he stands there stunned by the news.
—Didn’t Janus bear a grudge towards the current King?
None at all. He accepted exile as simply another one of his duties. When he stops the spy who was stealing the documents, that too was not done out of revenge or a desire to restore his personal honor: it was out of pure loyalty to the kingdom.

Footage taken from an emulated playthrough of the Android version via Bluestacks. The mobile version released in 2018 has high resolution artwork and can be played at higher resolution than the prior PSP and PS1 versions. So I figured the game deserved a proper recording in higher image quality.
I played the game with a Dualshock 4 (the game and Bluestacks supports game controllers). Menus require mouse movement, so I used the DS4's track pad for inventory management.
How to play the mobile version on PC with a controller:
1. Download and install Bluestack https://www.bluestacks.com/download.html
2. Set up a Google Play account and download and install the game
3. Connect your controller to your PC. If you use a Dualshock 4, I suggest using DS4Windows that also allows you to customize the trackpad and other things. https://github.com/Ryochan7/DS4Window...
4. Set up Bluestacks Settings to the following: Under "Engine", first choose OpenGL, then scroll down and select the 'ABI setting' to 'ARM'. Then go to 'Preferences' and enable "Use game's inbuilt gamepad controls"
5. Launch Valkyrie Profile Lenneth in Bluestacks with your controller connected. Menus are mouse-driven/trackpad-driven, combat and platforming are controller-driven.
