NEERAJ GUPTA: Hi. My name is Neeraj Gupta, and I'm a client and volunteer manager at Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Vista Center has had a huge positive impact in my life when it comes to coping with my vision loss. I have an MBA with over 10 years of corporate experience, but nothing prepares you for this life changing event.
My vision loss first started back in college when I had a hard time seeing in the dark, but I was able to adapt using just my flashlight. Then, in the daytime, everything became blurry and that's when I stopped driving and started to use public transportation. Doing my master's degree, I had a hard time seeing colors, so I started to use high contrast levels on my computer screen. And finally, after about 10 years in the corporate world, I had trouble reading text. And this is where I became a Vista Center client.
Vista Center has introduced me to low- and high-tech skills that are truly above and beyond. They have taught me voice over technology on my phone. Without even looking at it, I can now send emails, make calls, and even browse the web. They have also taught me how to use a screen reader called JAWS. Just by using the keyboard, and close my eyes, I can still build reports in Excel, make PowerPoint presentations, create Word documents, and even listen to my emails.
Not only has Vista Center taught me technology, but I have learned orientation and mobility skills. Valerie has come out to my home a few times to teach me safely how to navigate the streets, using just my white cane. Just when I thought I couldn't learn anymore, Valerie came out at night to teach me how to safely walk in the dark. She even taught me how to go to my local coffee shop. Sure, I didn't need coffee that late at night, but it definitely kept me awake while watching the 10 o'clock news.
All of what I have learned from Vista Center are critical work and daily living skills. Now, my goal is to continue to work at Vista Center to enhance this awesome nonprofit. They have truly taught me that, really, there is no barrier when it comes to vision loss and really speaking where there is a will, there is a way. I thank you, in advance, for your donations so young professionals, like myself, can continue to live their best life.
