Power Query in Excel - Practical Examples
In this video, we will have a look at the Most common and useful functionalities of Power Query in Microsoft Excel.
1. Trim and Clean
• Trim Remove Leading and Trailing Spaces
• Clean removes non-printables characters
2. Remove Duplicates
• Only remove identical rows. Words with variations in Letter case are considered distinct entries.
• For Case insensitive deduplication, add Comparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase as Comparison Criterion to the 2nd argument of Table.Distinct Function
• Sometimes, you may need to check more than one column for duplicate records. For example, in a company, there may be two employees with the same name, so may want to also check the address for each.
3. Change Data Type
• Custom Date Format
• DateTime.ToText( )
4. Split Column
5. Extract Values into a New Column
6. Add Column from Examples
• Create A Column based on Examples
• Power Query Will infer the pattern
• Like Excel Flashfill
• Ctrl+Enter
7. Replace Missing Values and Replace or Remove Errors
8. Add Conditional Column
• Like Writing a Nester If Statement in Excel
