QUICK TIPS:

1-When playing song arrangements which mostly consist of block chords, you can make the rhythmic texture more interesting and livelier by inventing a little melody based on the notes of the chords you are playing (arpeggiation), or syncopating the rhythm, so that accents don’t fall within the natural, expected places within the bar.

FUN FACTS:

1-Billy Joel’s parents divorced when he was young. Many years later, he went to visit his estranged father in Vienna, who had remarried and started a new family. It was during this trip that Billy Joel first got the idea for this song.

2-Billy Joel barely knew his German father, Helmuth, later known as Howard, a classical pianist who fled Germany during the Holocaust and made his way to the Bronx where Billy was born.

3-The city of Vienna is a metaphor for old age, presented as something to embrace rather than be discouraged by. To translate this musically, Joel wrote an introduction that resembles that of old European cabaret songs.

4-After bullies knocked out books out of Joel’s arms when he was walking to his piano lessons, he took up boxing as a teenager, and even won a few amateur fights in the Golden Gloves.
