Edison Denisov has provided a detailed commentary on his three-movement Guitar Sonata of 1981: “The sonata is very guitaristic but at the same time very difficult, and it also contains many intentional clichés. Take the opening movement, a Toccata, with its endless, regular guitar arpeggios. In principle, it is almost the same idea as in Johann Sebastian Bach’s C major Prelude from Book One of his Well-Tempered Clavier.” The second movement is a Berceuse that is basically lyrical in character, rather than an expression of the rocking rhythm typical of a traditional lullaby. “In the final movement, headed Souvenir d’Espagne, there are once again several clichés with somewhat ironic parodies of the Hispanicisms typical of writing for the guitar.” The reason for these references to Spain may be sought in the political situation in Denisov’s native Russia at the time of the work’s composition. Th e country was still cut off by the Iron Curtain: “I hadn’t been to Spain at that time, and I thought I’d never be allowed to go there. Hence this quasi-ironic music.”
