How to set up Montessori movable alphabets on your language shelves
Why do we offer the traditional Movable Alphabet alongside the Phonogram Alphabet? Because it is the easiest first step to writing!
Think about it this way. We've taught them the single pink and blue sandpaper letters and the double green sandpaper letters. Then, the logical next step is to help them write words with those same visual depictions of the key sounds, right?
Asking them to build phonograms right away is not isolating the concept of building words. It also means we'll tend to give them dictation or objects that we know will "work" rather than freeing them to express their ideas. And expressing our ideas is the whole point of writing!
