Dr. Montessori created the Sandpaper Letters in order to help the young child (approx. ages 2.5 to 4 years) gain multi-sensory letter-sound knowledge. By tracing a letter and saying its sound, the child develops muscular memory of a letter’s form, auditory memory of a letter’s sound, and visual memory of a letter’s shape.
Young children are really interested in learning all about letters and their sounds. This is a simple and fun presentation. We show them how to trace the letter, say it's sound, think of a few words that feature that sound, and then give the child a turn. Choose one consonant, one vowel, and one phonogram for each presentation.
