Lidar is Finding Pyramids Near the Amazon Forest!

More than 60,000 structures have been found underneath the Amazonian vegetation in the small country of Guatemala alone, all of them were identified by LIDAR and seem to be oriented to true north just like many other civilizations around the world. In such a tiny country with just 100 thousand square kilometres in size, one can only imagine what is hidden in the 5 and a half million square kilometres of the Amazon forest.
Most people, when asked about the history of the Americas, are quick to name the three famous civilizations known for their architecture, art, engineering and culture. The Mayans were known for being the longest and more prosperous of the group and are often viewed as the greatest Mesoamerican civilization, the Incas are famous for being the shortest lived of the bunch but at the same time the most advanced, the Aztecs are remembered for their precise calendar, sophisticated hieroglyphics and uhh human sacrifices, some history nerds might also be commenting right now about the Olmecs, an often forgotten civilization thought to be responsible for the invention of writing in Mesoamerica and for passing on knowledge to the Mayans.
And this video is exactly about that, the least represented civilizations in South and Central America. If you’ve watched my video about the Aztec Empire, you might remember me mentioning that the Aztec themselves don’t claim to have built most of their pyramids.
In fact, much more ancient and mysterious civilizations such as the Totonacs, Nahuas and Otomís are all candidates for being the original builders of these massive structures. When the aztecs arrived at the Anahuac valley, near modern day Mexico city, they found an abandoned site with magnificent pyramids and structures evidence of an advanced civilization who came before them, the city had been destroyed 600 centuries prior to the Aztecs arrival so they name the place “Teotihuacan”, the city of gods.
Unfortunately, we don't know the original name of the city or even the name they used for themselves. While there are some inscription in the city, they are pictographic, meaning they are just symbols, so there is no way to tell what language it was. But we do now know that it was the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas, with a population estimated at 125,000 or more, making it at least the sixth-largest city in the world during its time.
Records show that apparently the Teotihuacan civilization had commercial ties with the Mayas, with the latter using the glyph “Puh” to refer to the city, and this makes sense as the Mayans were spread over a vast area in the American continent and have been around since 15th century BC, what doesn’t make sense and has been making archaeologists around the world scratch their heads was what Brazilian farmers started to find deep inside the Amazon Forest.
