Lies - The Knickerbockers 1965
"Lies", by American rock band The Knickerbockers from Bergenfield, New Jersey in 1965, reached the #20 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It is their best remembered Beatles sound-alike hit single. It not only fooled fans, but it earned The Knickerbockers placement in the Beatles Hall of Fake. The band, which took its colonial-evoking name from Knickerbocker Avenue, Bergenfield's main drag, initially based its sound on an R&B/dance formula. However, It was their brand of Beatles style that earned them top-20 hits in early 1964, and 1965. When writing the song, they took the first two chords of the Beatles "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and added the word "Lies". The Knickerbockers competed with another Beatles-sounding group called the Redcoats that patrolled the southern tip of the Garden State.
