When you first move into a single-family home, there are a lot of costs people don’t warn you about…
In terms of budgeting for repair and maintenance, people have suggested following the 1% rule (setting aside 1% of your home cost for these expenses).
Aside from that, there are all the little upgrades you want to make to your home to make it feel like home.
I’d estimate that we’ve spent at least $120,000 on home improvements over the past several years (more than half of which was for a backyard home office, large storage shed, and landscaping).
We also decided to clean up our crawlspace area and get it encapsulated!
