Overcoming Our Biggest Off Grid Challenge Yet
After years of failed attempts to get it sorted, we have finally secured our off grid water supply. We've been collecting rainwater since we moved here, as there is no access to the mains, but it's always only just been enough to get by and last year the dry summer meant that we ran out.
Having tried everything else we could think of (we are close to sea level so even shallow wells draw salt water) we decided to create a water reservoir. We broke ground around a year ago, digging a large pond and lining it. Then we waited for it to fill. We were lucky that the wet winter meant we started the summer with a full pond.
This summer, we have finally finished the construction of the pond by completing the jetty. We chose to install it because we wanted the pond to be more than just water storage. After all, it takes up a lot of our land! Now that it is finally complete, we can draw a line under what was the biggest challenge of our off grid lives so far.
