“Main Amrita: Kuch Kahi, Kuch Ankahi” is an original interdisciplinary solo performance work created by Dr. Dimple Kaur, first developed in 2013 and premiered in 2014. The production is recognized as one of the first Punjabi Natyam works based on the poetry and life of renowned Punjabi writer Amrita Pritam, integrating Bharatanatyam, Punjabi literature, embodied storytelling, music, and contemporary performance practice.
Through movement, voice, gesture, and autobiographical emotional inquiry, the work explores themes of womanhood, longing, partition, identity, memory, resilience, and artistic freedom. Rooted in South Asian literary and performance traditions while engaging contemporary interdisciplinary aesthetics, the production creates a culturally specific yet universally resonant experience that bridges classical form with emotional immediacy.
Over the past decade, “Main Amrita” has continued to evolve through performances, community engagement, and interdisciplinary artistic exploration, including a 2024 presentation in Lake Forest. The work reflects Dr. Kaur’s long-term commitment to preserving and reimagining South Asian artistic heritage through contemporary embodied performance.
As part of her Applied Natya methodology, Dr. Kaur uses performance as a space for cultural memory, emotional expression, and intergenerational dialogue, expanding access to culturally rooted storytelling for diverse audiences across California and beyond.
