In 2022, the population was 11,828 inhabitants.
Demonym: Arealense
The name Areal carries within it the beginning of the place's history. At the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries, travelers and explorers, leaving the province of Minas Gerais and heading to the northern region of Rio de Janeiro, passed through the place, where there was a small sandy beach on the banks of the Piabanha River. This "sandy area" became a reference point for the unofficial passage and stopping point.
The roads that connected Minas Gerais to the coffee-growing areas of the northern region of Rio de Janeiro and, later, the route of the União Indústria Highway passed through the "sandy area".
The local population initially consisted of people who, seeing the opportunity to benefit from the flow of travelers, settled down and established trade in basic foodstuffs, grown on family farms, and in the handling and exchange of transport animals.
Later, the more permanent settlement occurred from the development of farms belonging to aristocratic families. The largest of these was the São Silvestre do Rio Preto Farm, owned by the Vieira Afonso family and adjacent to the Bemposta Farm. Over time, its surroundings acquired the name Fazenda Velha (Old Farm), now the name of a neighborhood. Subdivided into other small properties, these lands were leased or sold to other owners. It can be considered that these lands gave rise to a considerable part of the current urban and rural center of the municipality. Part of the center, where the "sandpit" was located, was bought from the Vieira Afonso family by the Wiechers family, who donated land for the construction of a Catholic church, where the current Nossa Senhora das Dores Parish Church is located. The current Boa Esperança neighborhood was part of the lands of Domingos Pereira da Costa, who, in the year of the abolition of slavery in Brazil, in 1888, donated that area to 15 families of slaves. Most of them, after being freed, continued to inhabit the place, giving rise to the community. Since 2010, the Boa Esperança community has been claiming the title of its lands as remnants of a Quilombo (maroon settlement) before the federal government, having already achieved recognition by Self-Definition from the Palmares Cultural Foundation on February 7, 2013.
From 1895 to 1938, the locality, already registered as "Areal," was the 7th District of Paraíba do Sul – the oldest city in the region. In 1938, with the emancipation of Três Rios, Areal became the 4th District of the new city.
Groups of residents from the district mobilized three times for its emancipation: in 1957, in 1963, and in 1992, when they finally succeeded. The movement, which began in 1990, believed that the issues and problems of Areal would receive better attention and would finally be solved with the elevation of the district to an independent municipality.
On April 10, 1992, Areal became a municipality.
