Silkworm cocoons are a natural fabric, made by silkworms after they have eaten all the mulberry leaves. After the worms have been boiled, the silk is in one continuous thread and is dyed. The dye can either be fixed with heat or chemicals, which makes them more permanent.
These days, most cocoon products are made from synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon. The mechanical properties of these materials make it much easier to spin into threads than real silk does. The
