Qi is in a state of continuous flux, transforming endlessly from one aspect of Qi into another. It is neither created nor is it ever destroyed; it simply changes in its manifestation.

Human physiology is based on the transformation of Qi. As we have seen, Qi can assume different forms depending on its states of aggregation or dispersal, and it is the motive force of all physiological processes. In the course of its work, Qi assumes many different forms: it is transformed, changed, transported, condensed, dispersed, it enters, exits, rises and descends. All these functional activities of Qi are generally called ‘transformation of Qi’, as constant transformation and transmutation are the essence of human Qi physiology.

Qi in aggregation forms the material body and is Yin in nature; Qi in dispersal moves and transforms and is Yang in nature. The Yin and Yang aspects of Qi form the basis of human physiology. If Qi is transformed properly, movement, birth, growth and reproduction can take place.

If Qi is flourishing there is health, if it is weak there is disease; if it is balanced there is quietness, if it moves in the wrong direction there is disease. Thus the transformation and proper direction of movement of Qi is the basis for the movement of Blood, the transformation of the Essence, the movement, transformation and excretion of Body Fluids, the digestion of food, the absorption of nourishment, the excretion of waste, the moistening of sinews and bones, the moistening of skin and the resistance to exterior pathogenic factors.

In a broad sense transformation of Qi includes all the various physiological processes and movements of Qi; in a narrow sense, it indicates the transformation of Qi by the Triple Burner.
