A fraction is a way of expressing one quantity divided by another. It represents parts of a whole or a division of quantities. It consists of two numbers and a line separating them. The top number is called the numerator, and it represents the number of parts being considered, while the bottom number is called the denominator, and it represents how many parts the whole is divided into. The line separating them can be called the fraction bar, and the relationship between the numerator and the denominator determines the value of the fraction.

A fractional number, also known as a rational number, is any number that can be expressed as the quotient or fraction abba of two integers, with a non-zero denominator bb. Fractional numbers include proper fractions, where the numerator is less than the denominator (representing a quantity less than one); improper fractions, where the numerator is greater than the denominator (which can be greater than one or represent a whole number and a proper fraction); and mixed numbers, which combine a whole number and a proper fraction.

In summary, a fraction represents the division of two numbers, and a fractional number is a type of number that includes both fractions and whole numbers (considering that a whole number can be expressed as a fraction with a denominator of one).

The terms of a fraction are the numerator and the denominator:

Numerator: This is the number on top of the fraction and represents the parts being considered from the whole.

Denominator: This is the number on the bottom and indicates how many parts the whole or unit is divided into.

These two terms are separated by a horizontal line or a slash, known as the fraction bar, which indicates the division operation between the numerator and the denominator. The relationship between these two terms determines the value of the fraction.

Fractions can be classified primarily into two categories: proper and improper fractions, based on the relationship between the numerator and the denominator. Proper Fractions

A proper fraction is one in which the numerator is less than the denominator. This means that the value of the fraction is less than one, since it only considers a part of the whole. Proper fractions represent a quantity that is a part of a whole, without completing it. An example of a proper fraction is 3443, which indicates that there are only three parts out of a total of four.
Improper Fractions

An improper fraction is one in which the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator. This means that the value of the fraction is greater than or equal to one, indicating that there is a whole and a part of another, or simply a whole number represented in fractional form. For example, 5445 is an improper fraction because it represents a whole (4/4) plus an extra part (1/4), which is larger than the whole. Another example would be 8888, which, although an improper fraction, represents exactly one whole, or the whole number 1.

Improper fractions are often converted into mixed numbers to make them easier to understand. A mixed number consists of a whole number and a proper fraction. For example, 5445 can be converted to 114141, where "1" is the whole number and 1441 is the proper fraction.

These categories help in understanding and manipulating fractions in various mathematical contexts, such as problem-solving, operations with fractions, and comparing quantities.
