A fraction is a way of expressing one quantity divided by another. It represents parts of a whole or a division of quantities. It consists of two numbers and a line separating them. The top number is called the numerator, and it represents the number of parts being considered, while the bottom number is called the denominator, and it represents how many parts the whole is divided into. The line separating them can be called the fraction bar, and the relationship between the numerator and the denominator determines the value of the fraction.
A fractional number, also known as a rational number, is any number that can be expressed as the quotient or fraction a/b of two integers, with a non-zero denominator. Fractional numbers include proper fractions, where the numerator is less than the denominator (representing a quantity less than one); improper fractions, where the numerator is greater than the denominator (which can be greater than one or represent a whole number and a proper fraction); and mixed numbers, which combine a whole number and a proper fraction.
