Performing a basic parasitic draw test on a 2004 Cadillac Deville V8. Trying to figure out what is causing our battery to drain at an alarmingly quick rate. When performing a parasitic draw test properly always make sure everything is turned off or put to sleep in your vehicle. You must close the latches on any door you are working inside of to prevent a false reading. Make sure to disconnect the hood light (if equipped) and latch to prevent a false reading. When hooking up your multimeter hook up the red lead to the 10A hole for the parasitic draw test. Always use the negative cable to perform the test to eliminate any kind of issues. When the multimeter is hooked up, hook the opposite side of the red lead that is in the 10A hole and put it into the negative terminal firmly, so it has a good connection, then take the black lead and put on the negative battery post firmly to ensure a good connection. You will see your multimeter putting out a high number, wait about 20 seconds and that high number should go all the way down to .5 MA or less if you have NO parasitic draw. If your multimeter is showing a number higher then .5 MA, that means some electrical component is draining your battery and causing a parasitic draw. To find out which electrical component is draining your battery and causing a parasitic draw, keep the multimeter hooked up, then go to your fuse box and start pulling out 1 fuse at a time, if you pull a fuse and the multimeter number doesn't change that means that fuse is not the issue. If you pull a fuse and you see the number on your multimeter go way down to .5 MA or lower, you know you have found the fuse that is causing your parasitic draw. The next step would be to see what that fuse controls and remedy the issue. You most likely have some sort of interior light in the ON position which is causing constant power to your battery and causing a parasitic draw, simply turn that interior light control to door mode or off, this way there will only be an interior light when you open your door.
