The Art of Dave Bailey
Dave Bailey is a talented artist and one of the wisest people I have known. Hence I interviewed him in my 2020 book Wisdom: Now and Always. He is a sculptor, illustrator, painter and book maker. He shares the following thoughts on the benefits of an ongoing relationship with art:
Pathways
"We all draw when we're young. It is sad that so few of us continue to do so as we age. If we're lucky - really, very lucky - we can find ourselves , if only for a moment, picking up our pencil with childlike anticipation at what might emerge this time.
Does it matter that our drawing is good?
Not really.
Does it matter that we can't quite understand what our image means?
Not really.
I remember reading as a boy that the hand sometimes knows more than the head. I didn't know how this could be, but the quote somehow made sense. I stored it away as a private mystery to be understood only much later. In that moment perhaps, when pen touches paper and a strong, confident line emerges as if by itself and wanders down an untrodden path, the head cannot quite follow ..."
