The rotational inertia of an object depends upon where the mass is located relative to the axis of rotation. This animation illustrates the rotational inertia calculations for several simple shapes often seen in Introductory Mechanics. For each shape, a typical "cylindrical slice" is shown, followed by a scan of these slices from the center to the outer extent of the shape.
