India to develop salt cavern-based strategic petroleum reserves in Rajasthan. This would be a more cost-effective and less labor-intensive method of storage than the current system of excavating rock caverns. Salt caverns are also more secure, as they are naturally impermeable to liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons.
The Indian government has partnered with Engineers India Limited (EIL) to study the feasibility of this project. EIL has the expertise and experience to develop salt caverns, having done so for other countries in the past.
The development of salt cavern-based strategic petroleum reserves would be a major step forward for India's energy security. It would help to reduce the country's reliance on imported oil and provide a buffer against future oil shocks.
