The original Dead Space has become synonymous with the term diegetic UI and remains one of the best examples of this type of interface design implemented in a game.
The 2023 remake aimed to preserve the original experience while elevating it as much as possible. This included the various interfaces throughout the game. The 2008 Dead Space still holds up, although it’s fair to say the UI design is one area that hasn’t aged so well. Motive Studios has done an incredible job at making the UI more usable and adding in new features such as accessibility, without losing the look and feel of the first game.
So in this video, I analyse the various user interfaces in the remake by comparing them to the original to see exactly how this was achieved and how it improves the UX.
