Countries like North Korea, China, Iran, and Russia are forming a powerful new bloc. In 2024, Richard Fontaine coined the term Axis of Upheaval to describe this rising anti-Western coalition, which has also been called the Axis of Autocracies and the Quadrant of Chaos.
I spoke to Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Anne Applebaum to get her thoughts on where this is going and what it means for the future of democracy.
