According to the 2019 report from the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA), beekeeping in Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) contributes 80% of the country's honey production. Despite this, only about 20% of Kenya's potential annual honey production, estimated at about 25,000 metric tons, is currently achieved, leaving approximately 100,000 metric tons unrealized. To scale up beekeeping in ASAL regions, Emily Lekarkar, a climate change master's graduate and an expert in apiculture, with support from the World Food Program (WFP), has initiated a project in Suguta Marmar Ward, Samburu County, empowering vulnerable women affected by conflict through beekeeping. Over the past two years, this initiative has empowered women affected by conflict to save 21 million shillings.
