How can we make a synth sing? Voices can sing one note at a time. In synth terms, being limited to one note at a time is called monophonic. In monophonic mode, we access a musical vocabulary born out of the physical one note limitation of the voice. The voice exists on a continuum, dark to bright. The synth's filter allows us to place the sound on this continuum. Where and when the voice falls on this continuum depends on the poetic content of what is being sung and the range. Lower notes require less air, energy, or tension and can be sung with a more relaxed, darker, smoother tone. Higher notes require more air, energy, and tension, resulting in a brighter, more tense, urgent sound. This characteristic can be integrated into the synth sound by increasing the filter cutoff's key tracking. The most vocal characteristic is vibrato; when the pitch continuously moves slightly above and below the intended note. It can define the personality of a voice, from nearly non-existent like a cool jazz singer to exaggerated and bombastic like an opera singer. Vibrato is controlled by two main parameters; vibrato amount and vibrato rate. A voice doesn't have keys, frets, or buttons. Its pitch is fluid. By adding glide, overlapping notes will slide into one another. These ideas are the key to injecting the human essence into your sounds. Use your imagination and make your synth sing.
