"Malina" begins seemingly as a love affair: a woman caught between two men. However, she doesn't feel at home with either of them, and it quickly becomes clear that behind the disturbed phone calls, mythical tales, late-night chess games, and desperate monologues lies more than just romantic chaos. Rather, the life of a woman unfolds, a woman who dreams of transcending the limitations of language and the violence of the past, yet repeatedly falls back upon a feeling of alienation in the world: alien in her longing to belong, alien in her need for autonomy. Poetically and with powerful language, Bachmann explores what it means when one's own hopes clash with societal expectations. What does it feel like to want to love and to say "I" in a world that knows no "we"?
Fritzi Wartenberg, a director from the first WORX cohort, and her team explore the question, "Why is the self sick, why is society sick, and why does this in turn make the individual sick again?" (Bachmann). Following "The Writer" and "Alias Anastasius," "Malina" is her third production at the Berliner Ensemble.
