The world of cinema has given us a lot of strange and bizarre looking people over the years. Sometimes these characters are designed to scare us, sometimes they’re designed to make us laugh, and on occasion they’re even designed to make us feel some sympathy for them.But regardless of the reason, they always get an emotional reaction.
Take for example, the fear that was created in viewer’s minds when they first laid eyes upon Linda in The Evil Dead, of the horror that was found in the face of The Pale Man from Pan’s Labyrinth or even Captain Spaulding from The Devil’s Rejects. And that's not even getting into the terror that could be taken from the psychopathic looks of Annie Wilkes in Misery, the pure evil of the demonic baby from The Passion of the Christ, or the nightmare fuel that was The Grand High Witch from The Witches.
But then, as we mentioned a moment ago, the flipside of the emotional spectrum can also be found in some strange looking faces from the movies. After all, who didn’t shed a tear when they first saw John Merrick in The Elephant Man? And who didn’t laugh at the sight of Lloyd Christmas in Dumb and Dumber or Austin Powers in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Yes, the truth is a strange face can make us feel a whole range of different emotions. And that’s exactly why they’re so commonplace on screen.
