Rest in peace to Alan White, drummer extraordinaire. You could not find a drummer more different than Bill Bruford in Alan White, but he was the perfect drummer for YES on Bruford's departure. Solid. Steady. Far more
tribal than Bruford's analytical approach, Alan White was a powerhouse.
I'm not a drummer by nature. I'm a drummer by luck. And it's been in recent months recording drum parts that I've realised that when I'm performing those parts, I'm trying to be Alan White. I'm not him by a long shot. But every song I do ... I go back to Alan White. And I hadn't realised he had such a massive influence on me, but he did. It just took awhile to reveal itself. And with his passing, I thank him for being such a quiet, yet loud influence on everything I do. As much as Chris Squire was to be honest. Just on a different instrument. And that rhythmic pairing of Alan White and Chris Squire is evident all throughout "Release, Release."
Where it shows the direction Alan White, Chris Squire, and Steve Howe were going was a different one than Rick Wakeman and Jon Anderson.
"Release, Release" was a definite precursor to 1980's DRAMA. It was just
missing Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn to make it complete.
Alan White. May your journey bring you to peace, and thank you for everything you gave to us when your journey brought you here. RIP.
