Enjoy A Fun Family Hike Through The Robberg Nature Reserve In Plettenberg Bay, South Africa!
If you visit the Garden Route of South Africa, you have to visit Robberg Nature Reserve in Plettenberg Bay. Plett is a beautiful coastal town, and one of our favourite places to visit. I'm totally biased as I grew up here, but it is one of South Africa's top coastal holiday resorts.
We attempted to do the Point trail with our kids but sadly had to turn around less than a kilometre from the Point, as Michael wasn't feeling well. Robberg has some spectacular views. (I shot this video on my mobile phone, so not the best image quality). The word "breathtaking" best describes this place.
Hiking to the Gap or to the Island on Robberg is relatively easy and most people should be able to manage this. Always hike with water, as there are some uphill sections that you will appreciate some water at the top. Summer or winter it can get hot on the protected peninsula.
There are some steep sandboarding dunes near the Island, if you are up to lugging a board with. On the way, you will find the Cape Fur Seal colony on the east side of the peninsula. We also came across a 5m Great White shark, patrolling the area. The seals are the primary food for these predators. If you are in Plett during whale season, you can spot Southern Right whales in the bay.
You can fish here if you have a permit, we spent a lot of time as kids feeding the fish. There are also braai facilities at the view site near the parking area - a great way to end a trail or watch the sunset.
