Background
Location: Celebration is located near Walt Disney World Resort, in Osceola County, Florida.
Development: The community was founded in 1994 as a way for Disney to create an ideal, small-town environment that reflected the company's values and vision.
Design and Concept
Architecture: The town features a blend of classic architectural styles including Colonial Revival, Mediterranean Revival, and Victorian. The design emphasizes walkability, with homes and amenities arranged to foster a sense of community.
Planning: Celebration was designed to encourage interaction among residents, with a central town square, pedestrian-friendly streets, and various public spaces. It embodies principles of New Urbanism, focusing on creating a vibrant, connected community.
Community Features
Residential Areas: The town offers a variety of housing options, from single-family homes to townhouses and condominiums.
Amenities: Celebration includes amenities such as schools, parks, a golf course, shops, and dining options. There’s also a lake and several recreational facilities.
Events: The community hosts numerous events throughout the year, including seasonal festivals, parades, and farmers’ markets.
Disney's Involvement
Ownership: While Disney was instrumental in the planning and initial development, it sold its stake in the community in 2004. Despite this, the town’s design and spirit still reflect Disney's original vision.
Legacy: Disney's influence can still be seen in the town's emphasis on creating a wholesome, family-friendly environment.
Modern Status
Governance: Celebration operates under its own governing body, the Celebration Residential Owners Association, which manages community affairs and maintains its distinctive character.
Growth: Over the years, the town has continued to grow and evolve, attracting new residents and businesses while maintaining its original charm and community spirit.
Celebration remains an interesting example of Disney’s ambition to create a new kind of American town, blending innovative design with a strong sense of community.
