📝 Lymph, directly or indirectly, performs a number of important functions:
▪️ Maintaining the constancy of the composition and volume of interstitial fluid and the cellular microenvironment, i.e., endoecology.
▪️ Return of protein from the tissue environment to the blood.
▪️ Redistribution of fluid within the body.
▪️ Humoral integration of tissues, organs, and systems.
▪️ Transport of products of enzymatic hydrolysis of food, especially lipids, from the gastrointestinal tract into the blood.
▪️ Supporting immune mechanisms by transporting antigens and antibodies, and transporting plasma cells, lymphocytes, and macrophages from lymphoid organs.
Furthermore, lymph is involved in regulating metabolism by transporting proteins and enzymes, minerals, and metabolites.
Lymph production increases during injuries, burns, and certain infectious and inflammatory diseases accompanied by increased catecholamine levels in the blood and increased vascular permeability. When various infectious agents (bacteria, viruses, etc.), as well as tumor cells, enter the lymph, the lymph itself can become a breeding ground for their increased proliferation and spread.
What happens when lymph flow is impaired?
Impaired fluid drainage is a universal, nonspecific process. It can be observed in many diseases and conditions, such as increased body weight, localized fat deposits, cellulite, and scars.
Microcirculatory disorders and internal edema are an integral part of inflammatory processes, tissue degeneration, and the natural aging process. Moreover, in most cases, tissue pathology begins with impaired venous blood and lymph flow.
Prolonged obstruction of lymph flow leads to lymph stagnation—lymphostasis.
Lymphatic drainage helps activate various factors that promote lymph formation and flow.
