📝 The subscapularis muscle is a flat triangular muscle consisting of individual muscle bundles with fascial layers between them. The muscle has two layers: superficial and deep. The deep fascicles originate from the subscapular fossa of the scapula, while the superficial fascicles originate from the subscapular fascia, which attaches to the margins of the subscapular fossa.
The subscapularis muscle is sandwiched between the subscapular fossa and the serratus anterior muscle. Only a small portion of this muscle is accessible for palpation. It is the only muscle of the rotator cuff that attaches to the lesser tuberosity of the shoulder. It adducts the shoulder toward the torso, internally rotates the humerus (pronates), and can also tighten the joint capsule, preventing it from becoming impinged. Onset of the Form
Myofascial trigger points of the subscapularis muscle are a common cause of frozen shoulder syndrome. Referred pain from trigger points is concentrated in the posterior deltoid region and can radiate medially over the scapula, affecting the undersurface of the upper limb and the wrist. This referred pain has characteristic features and is relatively easy to diagnose.
