In 1986, Federico Ibarra composed an opera entitled Madre Juana, based on a historically based story of demonic possession in a 17th century convent in Loudon, France. Among other depictions of the events, which included a trial and burning at the stake of a priest, was 1952 book by Aldous Huxley, followed by 1961 movie by Polish director Jerzy Kawalerowicz. Ibarra uses some thematic material from his opera in this sonata, which is as passionate as the subject matter might suggest.
