Wildebeest thinks it is a Nyala – Willy, the odd Camp-Wildebeest
This is Willy the Wildebeest! But the special thing about him is he doesn’t seem to know he’s a wildebeest. He thinks he is a Nyala.
Nyalas often HANG around camps. They feel very comfortable in the presence of humans. This behaviour however is not typical for wildebeest and neither is the habitat around this camp for them. But Willy doesn’t care.
When he started to hang around camp he would still bolt when he saw us. But over time, he realized, that his fellow Nyala Brothers were relaxed, so he also started to relax around us. He followed the Nyalas everywhere and then he started to play games with my cameratrap.
The spot just in front of the camera became his favourite. I am convinced he did this on purpose and he took more than a few selfies at day and night. He even started walking out of the frame in a dramatic DEMEANOR sneaked around the camera and did the same thing again, he loves dramatic exits.
Although he liked to make a fool of me, he quickly found a place in my heart. Camplife wouldn’t be the same anymore, without Willy.
