Why did evolution completely purge the wing blueprint from a 3.6 meter titan? Discover the technical story of the Giant Moa, the only bird known to science to have deleted its wings entirely.
Welcome back to Terra Time Capsules. Today, the Field Crew performs a structural audit of the South Island Giant Moa (Dinornis robustus). For sixty million years, New Zealand functioned as an isolated biological laboratory where the rules of terrestrial engineering were rewritten.
In the total absence of mammalian predators, the Moa pushed the avian body plan into the realm of the impossible. Standing up to 3.6 meters tall and weighing over 230 kilograms, it filled an ecological niche usually reserved for giraffes and elephants but it did so by committing to a radical "Zero-Wing" strategy.
