Marius' second line actually says to "cut" the candle. This is because back in those days, candles were made such that the candle wick had to be cut periodically to prevent the candle from burning out quickly, producing black smoke, or from flickering. It's especially important on wedding nights because they aren't supposed to let the candles go out throughout the night. This is also the reason why his first line emphasizes on the candlelights.
