In 1991, 27 Tsunami clubs, Goju-ryu, Jiu-jitsu, and Shotokan clubs united to create the International Shin-Shobu Karate-do Federation. Dankai, Taikai, and the Federation's charter were developed. "Shin-Shobu" (Japanese: "true spirit of struggle") is a universal karate-do movement that integrates the best technical achievements of various martial arts schools, thus avoiding one-sided development. Shin-Shobu is based on the traditional Shotokan style.
The Shin-Shobu style of karate is the successor to the Tsunami karate tradition. Therefore, absolutely all basic techniques, kata, and kumite techniques are taken from the Tsunami system.
The foundation of Shin-Shobu karate lies in the combination of many effective techniques from various karate styles.
All basic Shin-Shobu karate techniques are conventionally divided into three groups of special techniques. The first group is ate-waza. These are techniques used offensively. This group includes punches and kicks. Strikes can be delivered with any part of the hand: elbow, knee, fist, palm, instep, etc. Ate-waza in Shin Shobu karate also includes actions performed on the ground—a state of kumite, when there is no distance between opponents. These include chokes and painful holds.
The second group of techniques in Shin Shobu karate is uke-waza—defense. This category includes blocks, grabs, evasions, and holds. Blocks in Shin Shobu are powerful, performed while turning and using various maneuvers.
The third group—so-waza—includes all other techniques. These include stances, as well as rules for movement and falling.
The training philosophy of Shin Shobu karate is quite original and deserves special attention. Shin Shobu karate is positioned as the best style of hand-to-hand combat, which also promotes harmonious personal development. To become a good fighter, you must believe in your abilities while also working hard to achieve results. Training often includes a range of athletic exercises, which allows Shin Sebu to be considered a martial art with general educational value. These exercises help develop endurance, an indispensable quality for success both in sports and in everyday life.
Shin Sebu karate is also believed to be an effective method for understanding the meaning of life. This is achieved through training by acquiring the ability to enter bodai and nehan—states close to the concept of nirvana—the unity of body and spirit and the oneness of the individual with the surrounding world.
